A Guide for Your First Journey to Japan

Welcome to Japan. This country is a unique place where thousands of years of history intersect with cutting-edge culture. At Shima-no-niwa-juku, we believe that travel is not just about moving from one place to another, but a journey of discovering a "modern myth." To ensure your stay is comfortable and memorable, we offer the following guidance.

1. Cherish the "Ma" (The Space Between)

Japanese trains are the most accurate in the world, but major stations can be as complex as labyrinths. Please consider your travel not just as a means to reach a destination, but as a part of your journey. Give yourself plenty of time, breathe deeply, and enjoy the scenery. If you get lost, don't worry—use your map app, stay calm, and enjoy the unexpected moments.

2. Harmony in Public Spaces

In Japan, we value "Harmony" (Wa) to ensure everyone has a comfortable time in public.

  • Share the Silence: It is customary to refrain from loudly talking or making phone calls on trains and in public spaces.

  • Follow the Lines: Waiting in line is a virtue in Japan. Please be patient and join the queue.

  • Mind Your Belongings: In crowded areas, holding your backpack in front of you is a considerate gesture that is greatly appreciated by others.

3. The Spiritof"Omotenashi(Hospitality)

Japanese people truly appreciate when visitors respect and try to enjoy our culture. A simple "Arigato" (Thank you) will bridge the gap between hearts instantly.

  • Respect Sacred Spaces: Shrines and temples are not just tourist spots; they are sacred places for locals. Please walk quietly and respect the atmosphere of prayer.

  • Simple Greetings: A small nod or a greeting when entering or leaving a shop can create a warmer connection.

4. Practical Tips for Comfort

  • Connectivity: Having a Wi-Fi router or an eSIM will give you much more freedom during your travels.

  • Use Translation Tools: You don't need to speak perfect Japanese. Use translation apps wisely, and enjoy the process of communicating with the locals.

A Note from Shima-no-niwa-juku Every journey is unique. Don't just look for efficiency—sometimes, stop, stand still, and feel the air of the place you are in. We at Shima-no-niwa-juku hope that your trip becomes more than just sightseeing, but a "special story" that stays with you forever.

Have a wonderful journey in Japan.
